Garden: The New Nature | Design: Carla Perry & Michael Rochelle |
The New Nature is a high-concept garden developed by Carla and Michael alongside their former educator and mentor, Alistair Kirkpatrick. Heavily inspired by the seminal work of naturalist Tim Low, their design aims to foster a deep appreciation for biodiversity, while serving as a call to action regarding the environmental issues of post-industrial living.
By considering the amazing power of plants to clean and restore the environment through phytoremediation and hyperaccumulation, “The New Nature” asks you to look at polluted site with fresh eyes and a feeling of optimism. We do not need to lament what is lost – rather look to a world where humans work with plants to create a truly sustainable future.
Michael runs his own design practice, focusing on attainable and sustainable gardens. He believes everyone should have access to beautiful outdoor spaces that honour both the environment, and the uniqueness of the local area.
Carla works for a Landscape Design and Construction company in the Eastern suburbs, where her passion for softscaping shapes her design ethos, emphasising harmonious plant combinations.
Together, they look forward to showcasing The New Nature as a platform for discussions about the role of plants in our future. They believe that, in the Anthropocene, adopting a more humble perspective on our place in nature is essential – regardless of how we feed ourselves, or build our nests.
